
Paul Tiley was formally presented with his 7th Dan at Patchway Judo Club on Thursday 12 March, by Neil Adams MBE, 9th Dan, marking a significant milestone in Paul’s long and distinguished judo career.
Over 100 players, past and present, who have been coached or trained with Paul attended the evening.
Paul brings a wealth of experience to the sport, having begun his judo training in 1971. During his career, he spent a period training in Japan, further deepening his technical knowledge and understanding of judo.
In the 1980s, Paul was a member of the British Judo Squad for six years. As part of that team, he achieved silver medal success at the Dutch Open Team Championships in 1983. He also enjoyed sustained domestic success, holding the title of British Masters Champion from 1981 to 1985, and being crowned West of England Champion on 13 occasions.
Beyond competition, Paul has made a lasting contribution to judo through coaching and development. He qualified as a BJA Senior Club Coach in 1991 and was awarded his 6th Dan in 2000 in recognition of his contributions to judo in the West of England.
After a few years break from judo, Paul was persuaded to return to the sport, Patchway Judo, are delighted that he is proud to be part of our judo family. Paul imparts his vast wealth of knowledge and passion for the sport to the club’s players and coaches.
In 2026, Paul has now been awarded his 7th Dan, a prestigious honour that reflects both his competitive achievements and his decades‑long service to the sport. The presentation is a celebration of an exceptional judo journey and a significant moment for the local judo community.
